How to Get Your Kids to Excercise

With the advance of technology has come a decline in physical activity–this is particularly true for today’s youth. Why go outside and play tennis when you can play virtual tennis in your living room?  According to the Fitness Journal, obesity in youth aged 6-11 has more than doubled in the last 20 years from 7% to over 17%.  Convincing children to exercise is a serious challenge . There are three challenges in particular that parents and trainers face:

1. The lack of physical activity has resulted in increased body weight and decreased strength. Thus, many children simply cannot perform the exercises that have been a common part of fitness programs for so long.

2. They have short attention spans which makes it difficult for them to focus on any one activity for an extended period of time.

3. The pressure that parents sometimes place on their kids to pursue sports often turns the child away from physical activity altogether because they see it as a form of punishment.

Boxers & Ballerinas Think & Dance Like a Star performance

So how can parents overcome these challenges and get their children to willingly participate in some form of physical activity? Research suggests that kids are generally more receptive to people outside of their home. In other words, a trainer or coach rather than their own parents.  Kids will often look up to these trainers as mentors and someone they want to please or impress.

The second key is to find a program that is basic and to get them started as early as the age of 6 so they can begin to develop primal movement patterns. This will ultimately lay the foundation for any organized sport or “formal training” your child might participate in. The idea is to build up to it and get them  involved and interested in something less structured and see where there interests lead them to.

All of our kids programs at Boxers & Ballerinas are rooted in this system. The goal is to create a fun and free formed environment that has just enough structure to achieve the benefits of physical activity. Boxers & Ballerinas now offers CrossFit

Kendra Smith, our very own kickboxing instructor, recently returned from Australia where she worked as a stunt double for an upcoming feature film.  As a CrossFit certified trainer, she was responsible for leading the stunt team in rigorous workouts, designed to achieve peak physical performance through a deep strengthening and conditioning of the core.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is “one of the fastest-growing fitness movements on the planet” as described by Business News Network. B&B Think & Dance Like a Star Showcase

YOU’RE INVITED!

Come check out our Think & Dance Like a Star live performance and improv showcase this Saturday, March 20, 2010. The kids have been working hard and are eager to show you what they’ve learned. The event will be held at our studio in Studio City from 7-8pm. There is ample free parking available and drinks and light snacks will be served.
